Ahlem
Hand-faceted acetate eyewear made in Oyonnax (France), gold-plated titanium in Japan
Philosophy
Parisian elegance designed in Venice Beach. Hand-faceted acetate made in Oyonnax, gold-plated titanium from Japan, every model is a Paris location.
History
Ahlem Manai-Platt was born in Paris, grew up between France and Tunisia, and settled in Los Angeles. In 2014, she launched Ahlem with an idea born in a Parisian cafe: eyewear that captures laid-back Parisian style, made in French tradition.
Acetate manufacturing takes place in Oyonnax, in the Ain department, the historic cradle of French eyewear. This is where the frame industry developed in the 19th century, and Ahlem works with artisanal workshops that continue this know-how. The acetate is bio-based, manufacturing processes are traceable and low-impact.
Titanium frames are made in Japan, plated with palladium or 22k gold. Every model is named after a Parisian location: Rue de Turenne (the Marais), Place de la Concorde, Bastille, Republique. Wearing Ahlem is wearing a map of Paris on your nose.
The design signature is faceting. Acetate edges are hand-beveled, creating geometric ridges that play with light. It is the brand's visual signature, immediately recognizable.
On Reddit r/EyewearEnthusiasts, reviews are positive: "Great, lovely faceting, great shapes and nice chunky cuts of acetate." "Great finishing/details on both their acetate and titanium frames." On r/glasses, a user notes the 22k gold and palladium plating. It is quiet luxury, not showmanship.
Ahlem also has a stated ethical approach: sustainable materials, responsible production, partners selected for social and environmental standards. That is rare in eyewear at this price point.
The positioning, 350 to 600 euros, is French artisanal luxury. Less ostentatious than JMM, more Parisian than Garrett Leight. For those seeking French elegance in eyewear, Ahlem is the obvious answer.
