Alchemy Equipment

Technical urban bags, Cordura and waterproof membranes, Melbourne

🇳🇿 New Zealand, Auckland Founded in 2013 $$$

Philosophy

Outdoor materials in urban silhouettes. Each model is a number, not a name. Minimalist Australia meets Scandinavian technical functionality.

History

Alchemy Equipment was born in New Zealand in 2013, not Australia as often believed. The founding idea: take technical outdoor materials, Cordura 630D, Kodra 900D, waterproof membranes, waxed canvas, and sew them into urban silhouettes that don't scream "I just came back from a hike." The result is a hybrid object, a city bag with the guts of a technical pack.

The naming system is the first thing that strikes: no marketing names, just codes. AEL005, AEL012, AEL026, AEL222. Like engineering prototypes or industrial serial numbers. Each number corresponds to a specific model in a catalog that doesn't change every season. It's anti-fashion by design.

The collaboration with Carryology, the Australian reference site for bags, marked a turning point. The AEL222, a limited-edition 30L technical pack, was nominated by the Carryology community itself. On enthusiast communities, the bag triggered a mini-frenzy. Carryology posted directly on specialist forums to announce the drop. The bag sold out immediately.

Among enthusiasts, a community known for its demanding standards on technical materials, a user tested the AEL012 (waxed canvas carry-on) for four weeks in Southeast Asia and concluded positively. The price raises eyebrows: 329 euros in Europe versus $240 in the US, a gap that comes up in every discussion. But construction is rarely questioned.

Manufacturing is in China, openly acknowledged. Materials are the real argument, not production location. The minimalist New Zealand design, stripped back, functional, no visible logo, meets the "grey man" bag community, bags that don't want to attract attention. Alchemy Equipment remains a niche brand, known to les passionnés insiders and Carryology readers, invisible elsewhere.
