Alden
American shoes in shell cordovan, Goodyear welted since 1884
Philosophy
Independent American factory since 1884 in Middleborough, Massachusetts. Alden is one of the last high-end shoe manufacturers still operating in the United States. Famous for its use of Horween cordovan and iconic lasts like the Barrie. Entirely in-house production.
History
Charles H. Alden founded the company in 1884 in Middleborough, Massachusetts, in a region that was then the heart of American shoe manufacturing. The initial ambition was simple: bespoke shoes, quality leather, Goodyear welted construction. The company made shoes for men and women, then landed contracts for the US Army. The reputation built slowly but solidly.
The turning point came in the 1970s when Alden decided to bet heavily on shell cordovan, leather made from the horse's rump, tanned exclusively by Chicago's Horween tannery. Alden became the world's largest buyer of Horween cordovan. The leather is dense, glossy, almost plastic to the touch, and it develops patina instead of cracking. An enthusiast summarizes: the 975s, Indy boot and Tanker are "the quintessential Aldens to be had."
The Indy boot, model 403, owes its fame to Harrison Ford. The costume department of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) chose a pair of Aldens for Indiana Jones. The model has barely changed since: Chromexcel, Trubalance last, Neoprene Cork sole. Among enthusiasts, an owner suffering from plantar fasciitis for two years described how the Indy boot literally saved him: "Two months down the road, the pain was fading. Three months and they're gold.".
The 975, Long Wing Blucher in Color 8 shell cordovan, is the other pillar. It's the quintessential American wingtip derby, worn with suits and jeans alike. Enthusiasts hunt exclusives at retailers like The Shoe Mart, J.Crew or Roden Gray in Canada (where the exchange rate saves $40).
Alden remains a family-owned independent company. Production has never left Middleborough. Every pair is hand-lasted, Goodyear welted. The company has no direct e-commerce, no own stores, no advertising. Everything goes through a network of selective retailers. Alden never runs sales. A recurring comment online: "Alden never runs sales, and it's nearly impossible to find discounts on shell shoes." A pair of cordovan shoes runs $700-800. Resale value stays high, vintage models in good condition sometimes sell above retail.
