Antoinette Poisson
Handmade domino wallpapers in Paris. Woodblock printing, hand coloring. Revival of 18th-century craft.
Philosophy
Wallpaper's ancestor, remade by hand, as in the 18th century. Each sheet is unique because each hand is unique.
History
2012. Three heritage conservators - trained at the Institut national du Patrimoine and the Sorbonne - found Antoinette Poisson in Paris. They know what antique wallpaper is. They decide to make it again.
Domino paper is wallpaper's ancestor. In the 18th century, dominotiers printed woodblock patterns on handmade paper, then hand-colored them. Antoinette Poisson reproduces exactly this process. Hand-carved blocks, sheet-by-sheet printing, manual coloring.
Named after Madame de Pompadour's maiden name. Range expanded to wallpapers, fabrics, covered objects. Patterns from 18th-century archives, reinterpreted with contemporary freshness.
