A.P.C. ⚠️ With reservations

Raw Japanese selvedge denim (Kaihara) sewn in France. Minimalist Parisian cuts since 1987.

🇫🇷 France, Paris Founded in 1987 $$$

Many models shifted to stretch, selvedge no longer standard across the range. High price (~€200) relative to Japanese alternatives with comparable fabric quality. Cuts remain excellent.

Philosophy

No-logo clothing, minimalist Parisian cuts. Raw Kaihara denim (Japan). Butler circular buyback program since 2008. Many models shifted to stretch, selvedge no longer standard. High price relative to fabric quality.

History

Jean Touitou, born in Tunisia, founded A.P.C. in Paris in 1987. The starting idea was almost provocatively simple in a fashion landscape obsessed with logos and bling: well-cut clothes, no visible branding, priced based on material and cut rather than marketing. Raw denim quickly became the pillar of this philosophy.

The fabric comes from Kaihara in Japan. The Petit New Standard established itself as the default jean for a certain creative Parisian bourgeoisie, then European at large. The cut is impeccable, the indigo dye ages well, and the Butler program launched in 2008 lets customers return worn A.P.C. jeans for store credit. Circularity before the word became a marketing argument.

Except the reality of 2024 is no longer that of 1995. Many models have shifted to stretch, selvedge no longer features across the entire range, and the denim community has grown sharper. On r/rawdenim, the verdict recurs: excellent cuts, but fabric quality declining relative to price. At around 200 euros a pair, Japanese alternatives objectively offer more denim for the same budget. The community's reservations rating is no accident.

A.P.C. remains a cultural gateway to raw denim, especially in Europe. The cuts are among the best on the market for a sober Parisian style. But the implicit contract between price and fabric quality has loosened. The brand now sells a minimalist lifestyle as much as an enthusiast's jean. It is up to the buyer to know what they are purchasing.
