Audio Note (UK)

British manufacturer of tube amplifiers, speakers, cables and sources since 1984. Fully artisanal production in West Sussex. Radically analog philosophy. Independent.

Peter Qvortrup is Danish. In 1984, he settled in England and founded Audio Innovations, a small tube amplifier company. Then came Audio Note (UK), and that's where the story gets complicated. The "Audio Note" name originally belonged to Japan's Hiroyasu Kondo, a tube hi-fi legend. Qvortrup obtained a license, then relations soured. Disputes, lawsuits, two Audio Note brands coexist: Japan (Kondo) and UK (Qvortrup). The story is long, bitter, and audiophiles still debate it.

Qvortrup's philosophy is radical. Single-ended triodes. Silver wiring. In-house capacitors. Hand-wound transformers at the Partridge Green factory in West Sussex. While the entire industry runs toward digital, Class D, streaming, Qvortrup digs in the opposite direction. He even makes his own speakers, cables, cartridges and capacitors. Audio Note is probably Europe's largest tube manufacturer, with over 150 products in catalog.

The system is organized in levels, from Level 1 (entry, a few thousand euros) to Level 5 (six figures). Each level uses increasingly refined components: copper capacitors, then silver, then tantalum. Same circuits, same topologies, but progressively nobler materials. The Oto SE, a 10-watt single-ended integrated, has been a classic for over 35 years.

A complete Audio Note system is described as a quasi-religious experience. Qvortrup holds regular factory tours, rare transparency in the industry. In a March 2024 interview, he's still at the helm, still independent, still convinced digital is a sonic dead end. Forty years swimming against the current, and the factory still runs.
