Audio-Technica

Headphones, phono cartridges and microphones - Japanese manufacturing since 1962

🇯🇵 Japan, Machida, Tokyo Founded in 1962 $$

Philosophy

Japanese audio brand founded in 1962 in Tokyo by Hideo Matsushita. Philosophy of democratizing quality audio. Strong Japanese engineering culture. One of the few major audio brands still owned by the founding family. Kazuo Matsushita (son) leads today.

History

Hideo Matsushita founded Audio-Technica in 1962 in a small Shinjuku apartment, Tokyo. First product: the AT-1 phono cartridge. Vinyl was king, and Matsushita knew the cartridge was the most critical link in the chain. In 1965, the company moved to Machida for more production space.

Expansion began in 1974 with headphones, then 1978 with microphones. In 1984, an unexpected turn: Matsushita launched AUTEC, an automatic sushi machine division. Sounds absurd, but it's genius. The mechanical precision required for phono cartridges applies directly to rice forming.

In 1996, Audio-Technica became official Olympic Games supplier. AT microphones are used in opening ceremonies and stadiums worldwide. The company also supplies US presidential debates.

The ATH-M50x studio monitoring headphone became a phenomenon. On specialist forums les passionnés, it's probably the most recommended headphone ever in the $100-200 range. The audiophile community considers it the closed-back value reference.

The AT-ART1000, a moving-coil phono cartridge, represents 30 years of condensed R&D. Stereophile (Michael Fremer) and StereoNet hail it as one of the world's best cartridges. Audio-Technica has come full circle: starting from phono cartridges, the brand returns to the summit.

The company remains family-owned and independent. Kazuo Matsushita, the founder's son, leads. No conglomerate acquisition in 62 years.
