Philosophy

A sweater that doesn't itch, seamlessly knitted in Shetland wool, washed in Highland soft water. Four generations of knitters and a Doric word nobody knows. Bosie: a cuddle in wool.

History

1929. North-east Scotland, between the North Sea and the Highlands. Juliet's grandfather starts a knitting cottage industry in a region where knitting isn't a hobby but a necessity - fishermen need thick wool against the wind and freezing water. Four generations pass. The wool tradition survives factories, cheap imports, fast fashion. In 2005, Juliet graduates from Grays School of Art in Aberdeen, specializing in textiles and printmaking. She can knit before she can read stock prices. Ten years later, she launches Bosie. The name is Doric - the north-east Scottish dialect almost nobody understands outside Aberdeenshire. 'Bosie' means 'cuddle.' That's exactly what a well-made Shetland sweater is: a cuddle in wool. Manufacturing is entrusted to Harley of Scotland in Peterhead - one of the last Shetland knitting workshops in the country. They also knit for Howlin', S.N.S. Herning and other brands that don't name their manufacturer. Bosie does. Highland soft water is used to wash virgin wools - it gives a feel no chemical treatment can reproduce. Each sweater is knitted seamlessly, in one piece. The result is a garment that doesn't itch, improves with washing, and looks like what you imagine a Scottish sweater should be when you close your eyes.

The name comes from a Scottish word meaning 'cuddle', a choice that says everything about the approach. Bosie doesn't do fashion knitwear or ostentatious cashmere. It's comfort knitwear, made to be worn daily, machine-washed, stacked in a closet. The opposite of the sweater you don't dare wear for fear of damage. Prices stay accessible for made-in-Scotland: £80-200 depending on the piece.

Iconic Products

The Shetland Crew Neck

The classic Shetland crew neck. Seamlessly knitted by Harley of Scotland, washed in Scottish soft water. Color palette drawn from the local landscape - heather, peat, grey sea. The sweater you pull on one October morning and don't take off until March.

Blue Mogganer

The signature line. Brighter colors, slightly finer knit, same seamless construction. The name comes from Doric - of course. It's the range the fashion blogs spot.
