Philosophy

Born in a California garage, moved to Tennessee in 2023. Tyler Axtell believes in American raw materials: Fairfield canvas (NJ), Wickett & Craig leather (PA). Zero-waste approach born from necessity became principle. 'Free repairs for life, even bear attacks.' 18 artisans in a coffee shop-store-workshop. Patina as 'cheat code', the more you use it, the better it looks.

History

Bradley Mountain doesn't exist. It's a place Tyler Axtell invented. "The whole point is the adventure is in yourself. Go to Bradley Mountain, whether it's a country on your bucket list or a totally undiscovered place."

Axtell started in 2012, in his Ocean Beach, San Diego garage. He was going to Switzerland with his brother, two weeks, one bag. Instead of buying one, he made it. The Wilder was born: a modular old-world backpack where you can strap your boots outside and your jacket to the side.

His father makes handmade puppets - that's the culture he grew up in. The waxed canvas comes from Fairfield Textiles, New Jersey, 20oz - the thickest Stridewise ever tested. Leather is Wickett & Craig, vegetable-tanned, Pennsylvania. Everything sourced in the US.

In 2023, he moved from San Diego to Columbia, Tennessee, opening a café-boutique-workshop with his wife (co-owner). 18 employees. The comparison to Filson comes up often and is flattering: noticeably thicker canvas, more volume, and fully Made in USA construction where some competitors rely on partial overseas assembly. Long-term feedback highlights bags holding up well after years of use. Free lifetime repair, zero-waste approach.

Iconic Products

The Wilder

The founding bag, born from a trip to Switzerland. Roll-top backpack in 20oz waxed canvas and Wickett & Craig vegetable-tanned leather. Modular: boots, jacket, accessories can be strapped outside. Often compared favorably to Filson: thicker canvas, more volume. Patina photos after years of use have become a classic among enthusiasts.

The Biographer

The urban roll-top. More compact than the Wilder, same waxed canvas/leather combo. Makers Market lists it as a favorite. The daily commute bag, not the expedition one. Same construction, same materials, more reasonable format.

The Weekender

The waxed canvas and leather travel duffle. The Wilder's companion for weekends. Big enough for 3 days, handsome enough for a hotel. Same premium materials (Fairfield 20oz, Wickett & Craig), same robust stitching.
