Carvil
Classic Parisian shoes, manufactured by Magnani in Italy
French brand, manufactured by Magnani in Italy. No in-house production.
Philosophy
Historic French brand founded in 1952, positioned in classic men's footwear. Carvil does not manufacture in-house, production is handled by Magnani in Italy. A Parisian name with Italian manufacturing, in a segment where competition (Carlos Santos, Berwick) often offers better value.
History
Paris, 1952. Henri Lederman opens Carvil on rue Royale, then sets up shop at 67 rue Pierre-Charron, right in the Golden Triangle of the 8th arrondissement. The shutters haven't come down since. The shoes are made in Italy, in the Milan area, by artisan workshops whose names Carvil doesn't share. The brand is a Parisian label, not a manufacturer.
What defines Carvil is French cinema. Lino Ventura wears the first Triomphe loafer in Les Tontons Flingueurs. Alain Delon wears Carvil as Tom Ripley in Plein Soleil, René Clément's film that preceded The Talented Mr. Ripley by twenty years. Belmondo too. The Nouvelle Vague wore Carvil. Abroad, Charles Bronson toured the world in Carvil, Cary Grant admitted buying his in Paris. The Triomphe loafer became the quintessential French playboy shoe, the one Dutronc sang about without naming.
Then the desert years. Ownership change in the 80s, quiet 2000s. In 2010, Frédérique Picard, formerly of L'Oréal, acquires the brand with investors and relaunches. Frank Charriaut, a veteran accessories designer who worked at Chanel, designs a tight collection. The clientele shifts generations: Ben Harper, Stromae, Benjamin Biolay, Édouard Baer. The brand is present in France, Japan, South Korea and the US, but remains deeply confidential. Short range, limited production, niche positioning. The elegant ghost of the Golden Triangle.
