Philosophy

Since 1643, Cire Trudon has served as the guardian of the French royal candle-making tradition. By hand-pouring every piece in its Normandy manufacture and honoring its historic pedigree through exceptional olfactory compositions, the house ensures that its legendary flame continues to light the finest interiors around the world.

History

The story of Cire Trudon began in 1643 when Claude Trudon opened a small shop on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris, selling spices and candles. While modest at first, the business would soon illuminate the course of French history. In 1702, a specialized manufacture for bleaching wax and crafting candles was established in Antony, receiving the prestigious title of "Manufacture Royale" in 1719. In 1737, Jérôme Trudon, a descendant of Claude, acquired this royal facility and revolutionized the art of candle-making by developing beeswax candles of a singular, perfect whiteness. This achievement gave birth to the house motto: "Deo Regique Laborant" - the bees work for God and the King.

Trudon's candles became the definitive source of light for the Palace of Versailles, creating the ethereal atmosphere that defined the French court. The house remained the official supplier through the Napoleonic era; notably, in 1811, the Emperor gifted his newborn son a Trudon candle adorned with gold medallions bearing his likeness. Throughout four centuries of revolutions, empires, and republics, the manufacture never extinguished its flame. In 2007, under new leadership, the brand pivoted to include high-end scented candles, successfully marrying its unparalleled historic pedigree with contemporary olfactory sophistication. Today, as the oldest candle manufacturer in the world still in operation, Trudon is recognized as an "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant," with every piece hand-poured in its Normandy workshop using traditional methods that have remained intact for nearly four hundred years.
