Philosophy

At Maison Corthay, we believe that the finest footwear is a perfect synthesis of tradition and artistry. Trained in the legendary Compagnons du Devoir guild, we apply the most rigorous standards of hand-craftsmanship to every pair. Our philosophy is to create timeless, sculptural shoes that are built to be repaired and cherished for a lifetime, distinguished by our signature hand-applied patinas.

History

Pierre Corthay’s journey began near Montpellier, influenced by the artistic eye of his great-aunt, ceramicist Valentine Schlegel. At just sixteen, he entered the Compagnons du Devoir, the world’s most demanding artisanal guild. For six years, he undertook a 'Tour de France,' honing his skills in the nation's finest workshops before serving as a craftsman at John Lobb and eventually becoming the workshop chief at Berluti. In 1990, with very little capital but immense ambition, Corthay took over an equestrian bootmaking workshop at 1 rue Volney in Paris, steps away from Place Vendôme. The brand’s international breakthrough came in 1991 with the creation of the Arca - a distinctive two-eyelet derby with reversed lacing. When Suzy Menkes praised his 'jewel-shoes' in the International Herald Tribune, Corthay was thrust onto the global stage. In 2008, Pierre was awarded the title of 'Maître d'Art' by the French Ministry of Culture, the only men's bootmaker to ever receive the honor. Every pair of Corthay shoes is treated like a canvas. The signature patina - applied layer by layer to create depth and movement in the color - makes each shoe unique. From the legendary Arca to the refined Wilfrid, Corthay represents the pinnacle of modern French luxury, blending the rigor of traditional guild training with a bold, contemporary aesthetic.

Iconic Products

Arca

Two-eyelet derby with reversed lacing, born by accident in 1991. The Corthay archetype. The model that put the house on the map, each pair hand-patinated.

Wilfrid

Classic oxford revisited by Corthay. Clean lines, deep patina, slightly elongated round toe. Parisian elegance distilled into a shoe.

Brighton

Tassel loafer, casual and refined. The piece that shows Corthay can do casual without losing an ounce of character.
