Philosophy

Founded in 1829, world's oldest luxury leather goods maker. Belgian Royal Court supplier. The Brillant (1958) is European luxury's best-kept secret. Proven quality and durability over decades. But Richemont acquired in 2024 - the independence that was part of the charm is gone.

History

1829. Charles Delvaux opens a leather goods workshop in Brussels. The oldest active luxury leather goods maker in the world. Before Hermès (1837), before Vuitton (1854), before everyone.

19th-century Belgium isn't the first place you'd think of for luxury. But Delvaux settles in. In 1883, the house patents the first handbag with a patented lock. In 1908, it becomes supplier to the Belgian Royal Court.

1958: the Brillant. A bag inspired by a belt buckle, with an arc-shaped clasp that becomes iconic. The Brillant is to Delvaux what the Kelly is to Hermès - except nobody outside Belgium knows it. The best-kept secret in European luxury.

On specialist forums, reviews are glowing. "Hermès quality at half the price." "Best kept secret in ultra luxury handbags." Bags lasting 15, 20, 50 years. Build quality is real - selected leathers, solid stitching, robust hardware.

Sartorialisme qualifies the picture: build quality may be comparable to Polène, a French brand selling at 250-500 euros, while Delvaux charges 18 times more. The price gap reflects heritage, selective distribution, and positioning rather than proportional quality difference.

In 2024, Richemont acquired Delvaux. Belgian independence is over. The question is whether Richemont will preserve what makes Delvaux unique - discretion, quality, long-term thinking - or absorb it into group growth logic.

Iconic Products

Le Brillant

Created in 1958, the Brillant is a structured bag with an arc-shaped clasp inspired by a belt buckle. The bag Belgians know and the rest of the world is discovering. Understated design, almost austere. No visible logo, no loud monogram. Just a shape, a clasp, and leather. Owners on specialist forums report carrying them for 15, 20 years. Structure holds, leather develops patina, clasp works. A bag built to last, not to be replaced each season.
