Philosophy

Tom Donhou builds steel bicycles by hand in his East London workshop. Every frame is bespoke or small-batch, using tubes made from over 80% recycled material. No carbon, no mass production, no compromise. A Donhou is ordered, discussed, and built to last. The kind of brand that exists because its founder would rather braze frames than manage spreadsheets.

History

The idea is born in 2007, somewhere near the Gobi Desert. Tom Donhou, a trained designer and bike messenger by passion, is cycling across China when the epiphany hits at four in the morning, camped by a dusty roadside: he should combine his two obsessions - design and cycling - and build his own steel frames, in the UK.

He starts in Norwich, near Mike Burrows, designer of the legendary Lotus that Chris Boardman rode at the 1992 Olympics. In 2011, only his second year as a professional framebuilder, he wins Best in Show at Bespoked Bristol, the UK's premier handbuilt bike show. The workshop later moves to Hackney, East London.

Donhou doesn't just build elegant bikes. In 2013, he attempts a speed record behind his own 1955 Ford Zephyr, pedaling a 104-tooth chainring. Result: 129.4 km/h on his own legs. The kind of experiment that sums up the brand's spirit - a mix of serious craft and slightly mad adventure.

The early years are pure bespoke. Then come small-batch models: DSS1 (road), DSS2 (all-road), DSS3 (gravel/CX with partially 3D-printed lugs), DSS4 (MTB). More recently, the Utility, an urban bike designed to replace car journeys - not a massive cargo bike, but an elegant full-size-wheel machine capable of carrying loads.

Today Tom splits his time between London and Athens, where a second workshop-showroom has opened. The thread remains the same: recycled steel, local manufacturing, durability above all. No concession to the carbon trend, no outsourcing. Every bike is signed by its maker.
