Dovo
Straight razors and precision scissors, Solingen excellence for over a century
Uneven quality control reported by the community: some razors need additional honing upon receipt, finishes vary between pieces. The Solingen know-how is real, but consistency isn't what it used to be.
Philosophy
Over a century of Solingen expertise. Dovo combines family tradition and innovation in its historic workshops, perpetuating the art of straight razors and precision scissors with the legendary know-how of the city of blades.
History
Solingen, 1906. Carl Dorp and Carl Arthur Voos found DOVO, a straight razor workshop with forge and hollow grinding. The name contracts their surnames. At the time, Solingen has hundreds of blade manufacturers, the German Sheffield, where cutlery is industry and culture alike.
When Dorp and Voos retire, Fritz Bracht takes over just before World War II. After 1945, the electric razor's rise forces a pivot. Bracht visits barbershops to understand professional needs, resulting in EUREKA, a curved-edge hairdressing scissor that relaunches the business.
The following decades bring consolidation. Son-in-law Ernst Kirschbaum joins in 1953. DOVO methodically absorbs Solingen brands: Bismarck (1957), Hartkopf pocket knives (1968), Fontana razors (1970). In 1996, acquiring Merkur, the safety razor specialist, completes the portfolio.
The issue is that the les passionnés community is unforgiving. Factory honing is consistently reported as insufficient, blade geometry varies between specimens, finishes are uneven. The know-how is real. Solingen steel is real. But quality control no longer matches the myth.
