ECM Manufacture

Prosumer and commercial portafilter espresso machines, handcrafted in Germany.

Philosophy

German-Italian espresso machines: Heidelberg engineering meets Milan coffee culture. Brushed stainless, E61 groups, tank-like build. For those who want a commercial-grade machine at home, and can handle the weight.

History

Wolfgang Hauck started in coffee in the 80s, when Germany drank filter and espresso was still an Italian thing. He imported Italian machines, distributed them, learned them inside out. After twenty years, he concluded the engineering wasn't matching the passion.

In 1996, he founded ECM in Heidelberg. When legal disputes with the original Italian ECM arose in the early 2000s, Hauck decided: no more distributing, he'd manufacture. ECM Manufacture was born from that break. The word "Manufacture" isn't marketing. It's a declaration of independence.

The idea is precise: take Italian espresso culture, the E61 group, the portafilter ritual, and encase it in a German chassis. Brushed stainless, impeccable welds, oversized boilers, precision PID. Machines have been hand-assembled near Heidelberg since 2014, each unit individually tested.

His son Michael joined management in 2009. Among enthusiasts, the Synchronika is considered the "endgame" prosumer machine. What distinguishes ECM is sobriety. No Bluetooth, no app, no touchscreen. A lever, a pressure gauge, a switch. The machine makes coffee, period.

Iconic Products

Synchronika

The flagship of the prosumer range, often cited as the 'endgame' machine by enthusiasts. It's a dual-boiler with PID, offering exceptional temperature stability and steam power. The price is steep, but the community considers it a lifetime investment. Be warned, it's heavy and bulky, not for nomads.

Technika V PID

An iconic heat-exchanger (HX) machine, known for its robust stainless steel construction and classic design. It delivers excellent espresso quality and powerful steam. Some novice users might find the 'temp surfing' learning curve a bit steep without PID, though V PID versions mitigate this issue.

Mechanika V Slim

The compact version of the HX range, ideal for smaller kitchens without sacrificing performance. It retains ECM's build quality and steam power, but its water reservoir is smaller, and it remains a significant investment for its size.
