Edwin Japan

Japanese MIJ denim, stone wash inventor, 13-15 factories in Japan

🇯🇵 Japan, Tokyo Founded in 1947 $$

Not to be confused with Edwin Europe, a separate entity operated under license by Work In Progress (Carhartt WIP's parent). European production is mainly in Tunisia. Only models labeled 'Made in Japan' come from Edwin's Japanese factories.

Philosophy

The absolute pioneer of Japanese denim since 1947. Stone wash inventor. Full vertical integration with 13-15 factories in Japan and the best weavers (Kaihara, Kurabo). MIJ Edwin is excellent value in Japanese denim.

History

Tokyo, 1947. Post-war Japan. Mr. Tsunemi opens a shop importing and repairing used American jeans, military surplus, worn denim left behind by soldiers. He learns jeans inside out, literally, by taking apart Levi's to understand how they're made.

In 1961, he renames the brand Edwin, an anagram of DENIM. In 1963, the turning point: Edwin develops stone washing, pumice stones in the drum giving new denim a lived-in look. Two years before anyone in Europe or America thinks of it.

Edwin integrates vertically. Completely. 13 to 15 factories in Japan, in-house weavers (Kaihara, Kurabo, Nihon Menpu), spinning to finishing under one roof. In 2016, Itochu Corporation acquired Edwin 100%.

The crucial point: Edwin Japan and Edwin Europe are SEPARATE entities. Edwin Europe is operated under license by Work In Progress (Carhartt WIP's parent), manufactured mainly in Tunisia. The Edwin jeans you buy in Amsterdam or Paris have nothing to do with Tokyo's. Same name, same logo, completely different manufacturing.

Iconic Products

Regular Tapered (Made in Japan)

Edwin Japan's signature jean. Regular tapered cut, Japanese selvedge woven by Kaihara or Kurabo, 12-14oz. The cut that works on everyone, denim that ages like Japanese whisky. Check the Made in Japan label.

Nashville (Stone Wash)

A nod to the 1963 invention. Factory stone wash, the process Edwin invented before anyone else. Ready-to-wear jeans that tell the brand's story through their treatment.

ED-80 Slim Tapered

Edwin's slim cut, more fitted than the Regular Tapered. Available in Japanese selvedge (MIJ line) or standard denim. The Made in Japan raw selvedge version is what interests enthusiasts. The European version is a different product.
