Emling
French shoes, made by Carlos Santos in Portugal
French brand, but manufacturing is done by Carlos Santos in Portugal. Shoes are designed in France and produced in São João da Madeira.
Philosophy
French brand founded in 1985, positioned in the accessible segment of men's footwear. Emling does not manufacture in-house, production is handled by Carlos Santos in Portugal, one of the best manufacturers in the segment. In practice, you're buying Carlos Santos with French design and a slight brand markup.
History
Emling's story is inseparable from Marcos Fernandez Cabezas, a key figure in French footwear. In the 70s, Cabezas launched Sebago in France. In the 80s, he created Bowen. In 1995, he founded Emling, positioned in the mid-range segment of men's welted shoes: accessible Goodyear, Parisian design, Portuguese production.
The model is simple. Emling doesn't manufacture. Production is handled by Carlos Santos in São João da Madeira, one of Portugal's best manufacturers in the segment. When you buy Emling, you're buying Carlos Santos with French design and a Parisian label.
Cabezas left Emling in 2000, sold his shares, and went on to found Markowski (budget welted shoes, now Orban's), then Septième Largeur in 2009. The man also relaunched Paraboot and imported Doc Martens to France.
Emling continues without him. The flagship at 96, rue de Courcelles in the 17th remains the main point of sale. At 200-350 euros for Goodyear-welted shoes made by Carlos Santos, the value is fair. But let's be clear: this is a Parisian intermediary, not a manufacturer.
Iconic Products
Richelieu Ligne Couture
Emling's top range. Goodyear-welted Oxford, made by Carlos Santos in Portugal. Full-grain leather, careful finishing. At 250-350 euros, this product justifies the brand's existence: Carlos Santos quality at a slight premium, with Parisian design and boutique service.
Derby Ligne Ville
The default office shoe. Welted Derby, smooth or grained leather, classic profile. The Ville line is Emling's core: the shoe you wear five days a week without thinking. Carlos Santos made, welted, leather sole. Fair for the price.
Sneaker Urban Chic
The casual concession. Leather sneaker, white sole, clean lines. The Urban Chic line is Emling's most recent, pivoting toward a broader audience. Less welted craftsmanship, more volume. The risk: diluting the shoemaker identity to sell sneakers like everyone else.
