Philosophy
Founded in 1963, the Enzo Bonafé workshop in Bologna remains a family-run bastion of artisanal excellence. Now in its third generation, the house is one of the few in the world to master all major construction techniques under one roof. By combining meticulous handwork with the finest global leathers, they create shoes of uncompromising quality and timeless Italian style.
History
Enzo Bonafé was born in 1935 into a modest family in Bologna. During World War II, his family fled to the Apennines. It was there, amidst the poverty of the mountains where children often walked barefoot, that he developed a profound appreciation for footwear. On February 5, 1948, at the age of thirteen, he was hired by the legendary A. Testoni. Over the next fifteen years, he mastered the secrets of the craft, becoming an exceptional leather cutter and an expert in skins. It was also at this factory that he met his future wife, Guerrina.
In October 1963, the couple opened a tiny workshop in Bologna. It was a difficult time for the Italian shoe industry, and they struggled to secure credit or support. However, Bonafè’s unwavering belief in his craftsmanship gave him the courage to walk into the most luxurious boutiques across Italy, samples in hand, to prove his worth. His persistence paid off as retailers recognized the extraordinary quality of his work.
What distinguishes the house today is its simultaneous mastery of nearly every major construction technique - Goodyear welt, Blake, Blake Rapid, and Norwegian - a technical feat that is exceedingly rare. This versatility has made Bonafè a prestigious "ghost supplier" for some of Europe’s finest names, including Aubercy in Paris. Following Enzo’s passing in May 2023, his children Massimo and Silvia continue to lead the small team, maintaining a level of hand-welted precision and value that remains highly revered by enthusiasts worldwide.
