Flint and Tinder

Heritage made-in-USA clothing, waxed jackets, selvedge denim, the 10-Year Hoodie

🇺🇸 United States, Los Angeles Founded in 2012 $$$

Philosophy

Heritage basics, made in America, sold at a human price. Flint and Tinder doesn't claim exceptional craftsmanship, it's solid, honest workwear that owns its positioning. The house label of a platform that knows what its customers want to wear.

History

Jake Bronstein, ex-marketing consultant, launches in 2012 with a simple idea: reignite American manufacturing and save a few factories along the way. He starts on Kickstarter with.. men's underwear. Made in a family-run American factory. $291,493 raised, nearly ten times the goal.

The 10-Year Hoodie becomes the first crowdfunded fashion project to surpass one million dollars. Guinness Book. The idea resonates: heritage basics, made in America, sold at a human price.

In 2016, Huckberry acquires the brand. Huckberry, for those unfamiliar, is an American e-commerce platform specializing in outdoor-urban lifestyle, think Mr Porter for the guy who camps on weekends and wears a blazer on Monday. Curated catalog of independent brands, polished editorial content, engaged community. Flint and Tinder becomes their house label, the in-house brand integrated into the catalog.

The Waxed Trucker Jacket becomes the flagship. American military waxed nylon, trucker cut, often compared favorably to Filson and Barbour, for $200-250 instead of $400-500. On enthusiasts: 'very impressed with fit and quality,' 'definitely high quality.'

Criticisms exist. Polyester lining instead of cotton on some models, a questionable choice at this price. And since it's Huckberry's house brand, some doubt the objectivity of reviews on their own site. Fair enough.

But overall, Flint and Tinder delivers on its promise. The Made in USA is real, family-run American factories, locally sourced materials when possible. The price is honest for what it is. The brand doesn't pretend to be what it isn't: it's well-made American heritage workwear, not exceptional craftsmanship.

The risk to watch: drift toward lifestyle marketing over product. When your owner is a media-commerce site, the temptation for storytelling to replace substance is permanent. For now, the product holds.

The one that started it all. Heavy fleece hoodie, made in USA, guaranteed ten years. First crowdfunded fashion project to exceed one million dollars on Kickstarter, Guinness Book. 365 Pant

The versatile chino. Stretch cotton, modern cut, designed to be worn every day of the year, hence the name. The quiet bestseller of the range. Less spectacular than the Waxed Trucker, but it's the product that drives revenue. The well-executed basic that Flint and Tinder knows how to do.
