Fontenille Pataud
High-end Laguiole and Le Thiers folding knives, fully handcrafted in Thiers
Philosophy
One cutler, one knife, one signature. Fontenille Pataud has perpetuated the Thiers cutlery tradition since 1929, entirely artisanal manufacturing, noble steels, exceptional materials. The kind of house where 'artisanal' isn't a marketing argument.
History
Thiers, 1929. The French cutlery capital, in the heart of Puy-de-Dôme, where workshops have lined the Durolle river since the Middle Ages. It's here that Fontenille Pataud opened its doors, in the tradition of Thiers master cutlers.
Nearly a century later, the workshop hasn't moved. Manufacturing remains entirely artisanal, each knife passes through a single cutler's hands, from blade cutting to final assembly. No production line, no outsourcing.
The steels are noble: T12 (carbon, the French classic), Sandvik 12C27 (Swedish stainless), Damascus for exceptional pieces. Handles are in materials sometimes worth more than the blade, century-old olive wood, juniper, ram horn, fossil mammoth ivory.
Fontenille Pataud produces Laguiole and Le Thiers, the two great models of French cutlery. The Laguiole with its forged bee, yatagan blade, sculpted spring. Le Thiers, more urban, more refined, recognizable by its elegant shape.
On BladeForums and specialist forums, the reputation is established: 'more refined' than competitors. Connoisseurs immediately distinguish a Fontenille Pataud from an industrial Laguiole, the finish, spring adjustment, blade edge, assembly precision.
Each piece is signed by its cutler and guaranteed for life. The kind of knife given for an occasion and passed down.
Fontenille-Pataud's signature is the handle. Buffalo horn, mammoth ivory, stabilized wood, Damascus, each piece is a unique combination of blade and material. Collectors buy Fontenille-Pataud like others buy watches: for the piece, not the price.
