Forge de Laguiole
Artisanal Laguiole knives, folding, table and kitchen, made in Laguiole with exclusive T12 steel
Philosophy
Bring the Laguiole home and never let it leave again. Each knife is assembled and hand-finished in the village manufactory, by the same hands that chose to stay. Tradition isn't a museum, it's steel forged every morning.
History
The Laguiole knife has existed since the early 19th century, but by the 1980s, not a single cutler remained in Laguiole. Production had migrated to Thiers, France's industrial cutlery capital. A quiet scandal. In 1987, the mayor of Laguiole and a group of artisans decided to bring manufacturing back to the village. They founded the Forge de Laguiole. To make a statement, they commissioned the factory building from Philippe Starck, who planted a giant 15-metre blade on the roof. The message was clear: the Laguiole knife was home. The first cutlers moved in. They developed an exclusive steel, T12, tougher than standard stainless. They work zebu horn, giraffe bone, juniper wood, fossil mammoth ivory. Each knife passes through 40 to 200 pairs of hands. In 2012, the Geographical Indication finally protected the 'Couteau de Laguiole' made in the village. The battle isn't over, dozens of brands still sell 'Laguiole' knives made in Thiers or China, but the Forge has earned its legitimacy.
Architect Philippe Starck designed the Forge building, a giant blade planted in the Aubrac plateau, visible for miles. The boldest architectural gesture ever dedicated to cutlery. Inside, 80 cutlers work in a bright workshop with mountain views. Each knife passes through 6 to 12 hands.
The certification system is rigorous: each knife has a serial number, authenticity certificate and artisan signature. In the chaos of the 'Laguiole' market, millions of counterfeits, this traceability is essential. Prices range from €120 to €800+ for collector editions.
