Gloverall
The English duffle coat since 1951, Northampton
Acquired by South Korean group E·Land in 1995. The Northamptonshire factory and Made in England manufacturing are maintained for the Signature Collection, but the brand is no longer independent.
Philosophy
The duffle coat is Gloverall. Since 1951, the brand does one thing and does it well: coats in British wool, horn toggles, cuts that don't change. The Monty, the Morris, the Churchill - three silhouettes, seventy years of constancy.
History
London, 1951. Harold and Freda Morris run a military surplus business, H&F Morris. The Ministry of Defence offers them a massive stock of unused Royal Navy duffle coats from WWII. Instead of selling them as-is, the Morrises see further: they refine the coat, add civilian details, and found Gloverall. The duffle coat leaves the sea for the street.
Takeoff is quick. In 1957, Tony Brooks wears the Monty at the Monaco Grand Prix, alongside Stirling Moss. In 1962, demand justifies their own factory in Northamptonshire. In 1965, exports begin: Japan, Hong Kong, Australia. The duffle coat goes global. In the 1980s, Gloverall outfits the British Winter Olympic team (1980, 1984 - Torvill and Dean). Princess Anne visits the factory in 1985.
In 1995, a turning point: Gloverall is acquired by South Korean group E·Land, an Asian fashion giant. Made in England production is maintained - that's the essential. That same year, the Monty graces the cover of Oasis's Roll With It single. The duffle coat is at the heart of Britpop.
On specialist forums, enthusiasm is real. enthusiasts (.): 'Quality matches the price. Can't stop looking at it. In love.' One user has worn theirs for 10 years with no sign of wear. enthusiasts consistently cites it as THE duffle coat reference over Burberry. One caveat: a pilling report among enthusiasts, and a jute rope decomposition issue flagged among enthusiasts.
Gloverall is no longer independent, and that deserves to be said. But the factory still runs, the wool is British, the toggles are buffalo horn. The duffle coat is them.
