The official story goes back to 1792, when the Martin family made trunks in Paris. In 1853, François Goyard took over and gave it his name. The address, 233 rue Saint-Honoré, hasn't changed since. It's the oldest leather goods shop still operating in Paris.

The Goyardine pattern - chevrons painted on coated canvas - became the brand's identity. Each canvas reportedly receives three hand-applied paint layers. It's attractive and recognizable, but let's be clear: Goyardine is coated cotton, not leather. It's light - which some mistake for cheap, and others consider an advantage.

Goyard doesn't advertise. No campaigns, no models, no shows. No e-commerce. To buy Goyard, you go to the store. That's their marketing strategy - and it works. Perceived scarcity does the rest.

On specialist forums, opinions lean positive. "Quality superior to LV" comes up often. But lightness has a cost: seams and corners wear faster than full-grain leather bags. Compared to Moynat or Hermès in leather, durability isn't the same.

The Signoles family has controlled the house since 1998. No luxury group behind it. But independent doesn't mean artisanal. Goyard is industrial luxury production - streamlined, optimized, standardized quality control. Goyard cultivates mystery. That's part of the charm. But mystery doesn't change the product: coated cotton with leather trim, well made, sold at a premium.
