GRAYL

Fast-press portable water purification systems.

🇺🇸 United States, Seattle Founded in 2012 $$$

Philosophy

Filter bottles that purify water in 8 seconds, like a French press, but for river water. Designed in Seattle, used by NGOs, military and hikers who don't want tablets. Anti-plastic by design.

History

Travis Merrigan gets sick while traveling. Contaminated water. Nancie Weston worries about plastic waste and daily water quality. In 2011, the idea: what if you took a French press and applied it to water purification?

GRAYL is born in Seattle in 2012. The concept: fill the outer bottle with raw water, press the plunger, 15 seconds later you have purified water. No pumping, no tablets, no UV. The cartridge removes viruses (99.99%), bacteria (99.9999%), protozoa (99.9%), heavy metals and microplastics. This isn't just a filter like Sawyer or LifeStraw - it's a purifier. Filters don't kill viruses, purifiers do.

The GeoPress in stainless steel became the flagship. Used by NGOs, military, conflict zone journalists. On specialist forums, feedback is polarized: fans swear by it for travel, critics point to weight (450g empty), increasing press difficulty as filters wear, and replacement cartridge costs. For urban travel and clear water hiking, probably the most practical system out there. For ten-day muddy water bushcraft, a Sawyer Squeeze with pre-filtration is better suited.

Iconic Products

GeoPress Purifier

The brand's flagship, a stainless steel purifier bottle that removes viruses, bacteria, and protozoa in 15 seconds. Its simple, effective press mechanism is a major asset for travelers and hikers. The filter requires regular replacement, which adds to the ongoing cost.

UltraPress Purifier

A more compact and lighter version of the GeoPress, ideal for adventures where every gram counts. It offers the same fast and reliable filtration but with a slightly smaller capacity. Like its larger sibling, the cost of replacement cartridges is a factor to consider.

GeoPress Titanium

The titanium version of the GeoPress, launched in 2023. Lighter than stainless steel, stronger, pricier too (around $100). For those who already have the classic GeoPress and want to save weight without sacrificing purification.
