Grenson
Goodyear welt shoes, historic Northampton factory since 1866
Grenson makes its Triple Welt line in Northampton (GB), but the G:Two line is produced in India. On the website, the distinction isn't always clear. Among enthusiasts, buyers expecting Northampton have received India. Check the collection before buying.
Philosophy
Goodyear welt shoe house founded 1866. Historic Northampton factory. Triple Welt (GB) and G:Two (India) lines. Acquired by Tim Little in 2010.
History
William Green, born 1835, starts making shoes in 1866 in Rushden, Northamptonshire. "Grenson" (Green + son) is registered in 1913 - one of the UK's first registered shoe brands.
In 2010, Tim Little buys the brand from the founding family. He modernizes design while keeping Northampton production for the top line (Triple Welt: 200+ operations, eight weeks per pair). But Grenson also creates G:Two, made in India. Same branding, lower price. Among enthusiasts, the confusion is documented: buyers think they're getting Northampton, receive India.
The issue isn't Indian manufacturing. It's transparency. Triple Welt from Northampton justifies every penny. G:Two at £250-350 for Indian-made is less clear. Grenson became two brands in one: a historic Northampton Goodyear welt house, and a fashion brand outsourcing to India.
