Haglöfs
Outdoor clothing and equipment, Swedish manufacturing since 1914
Haglöfs was acquired by ASICS in 2010, then resold to Hong Kong fund LionRock Capital (Clarks owner) in 2024. Quality remains praised on specialist forums despite ownership changes. PFC-free DWR is a laudable environmental initiative but may affect water beading performance.
Philosophy
Founded in 1914, Haglöfs is rooted in the Scandinavian wilderness. We believe in technical excellence and environmental responsibility, pioneering sustainable solutions like PFC-free DWR. Our mission is to provide rugged, reliable gear for those who seek to push their limits in the outdoors.
History
In 1914, in the rugged landscape of Torsång, Dalarna, a carpenter named Wiktor Haglöf decided to solve a problem for local forestry workers. These men endured long distances carrying heavy gear in bags that were poorly designed and easily fell apart. Wiktor sketched a pattern, bought some fabric, and asked a neighbor with a sewing machine to assemble it. He added the leather straps and buckles himself, birthing the first Haglöfs backpack in a simple wooden cabin. As Sweden industrialized, Haglöfs grew alongside it, evolving from forestry gear to equipment for hikers and mountaineers. It became Scandinavia’s definitive outdoor brand - often called the 'Swedish Patagonia.' In 2010, the brand was acquired by ASICS, and later in 2024, it was sold to LionRock Capital. Despite these corporate shifts, Haglöfs' technical reputation remains stellar among the core outdoor community. The L.I.M (Less is More) range is a benchmark for ultralight minimalism, while the Roc series is praised for its alpine durability. Notably, Haglöfs is a pioneer in environmental responsibility, having led the industry in PFC-free DWR treatments. While this eco-friendly compromise can slightly affect water beading, it reflects the brand’s deep-rooted commitment to the Scandinavian wilderness. Today, while production is global, the heart and headquarters of Haglöfs remain in Järpen, Sweden.
