Philosophy
Harbeth is the dedicated guardian of BBC acoustic research. We believe in the absolute transparency of sound, particularly in the natural reproduction of the human voice. Every speaker is an artisanal instrument, crafted in West Sussex to bring the studio experience into the home.
History
The Harbeth story is fundamentally intertwined with the BBC’s pursuit of acoustic perfection. Beginning in the 1940s, the BBC Research Department launched the world’s most extensive investigation into loudspeaker design. After testing twenty-one commercial speakers in 1948 and finding them wanting, the BBC decided to engineer its own monitors. For three decades, BBC engineers created the legendary LS series - the gold standard for broadcasters globally. At the heart of this R&D effort was Dudley Harwood, a chief engineer who revolutionized sound fidelity by introducing polypropylene as a cone material, replacing the standard bextrene and paper. In 1977, Harwood left the BBC to found Harbeth (a portmanteau of HARwood and his wife, elizaBETH). His debut speaker, the HL Monitor, was the world’s first to feature a polypropylene cone. In the 1980s, the mantle passed to Alan Shaw. A passionate engineer, Shaw spent years developing the proprietary RADIAL polymer membrane, designed to reduce coloration and unwanted resonances more effectively than any other material on the market. In 1990, the HL-P3 was launched as the direct heir to the legendary BBC LS3/5A. The tradition continues today in Lindfield, West Sussex, where the XD (Extended Definition) series represents the latest evolution of this iconic BBC legacy.
