Philosophy
Huntsman is one of the oldest and most prestigious tailoring houses on Savile Row. Every bespoke suit is entirely cut and hand-sewn in the workshop at 11 Savile Row, by tailors trained in the house's tradition. 90% of business remains pure bespoke. The Huntsman style is unmistakable - a high, clean shoulder, a nipped waist, an elongated silhouette that owes as much to the house's equestrian heritage as to 1950s Hollywood elegance. Huntsman inspired the Kingsman films. And that's not product placement.
History
Henry Huntsman founds the house in 1849, purchasing a gaiter and breeches maker established in 1809 at 126 New Bond Street. The equestrian specialty becomes the house's foundation - Huntsman dresses Europe's hunting and riding aristocracy throughout the 19th century. Henry Huntsman's original breeches are still displayed in the shop.
During both World Wars, Huntsman serves as military tailor to British officers. The house's ledger books preserve the names of Huntsman-dressed officers and, in the margins, their fates on the front. 133 Huntsman clients died during WWI.
In the 1950s, under legendary cutter Colin Hammick, Huntsman becomes Hollywood's destination tailor. Ledger entries include Clark Gable, Rex Harrison, Laurence Olivier, Paul Newman, Gregory Peck, Katharine Hepburn. Hammick also dresses Hardy Amies, Hubert de Givenchy, Bill Blass, Lucien Freud. At its peak, over 130 tailors and cutters work on premises.
Ready-to-wear launched in the 1960s, along with made-to-measure. In 1966, Huntsman dresses the England World Cup football team. In 2013, Belgian financier Pierre Lagrange acquires the house. Campbell Carey, Creative Director and Head Cutter since 2015, continues bespoke tradition while modernising collections.
