Inside Line Equipment
Messenger and travel bags, hand-sewn X-Pac, Berkeley
Philosophy
San Francisco messenger heritage, now Berkeley-based. Hand-sewn in California. X-Pac and Cordura. Functional design that owns its rectangular geometry.
History
San Francisco, 2012. Eric is a bicycle messenger in the Bay Area. SF's messenger culture is a world apart: guys who speed through traffic with a bag on their back, who demand that this bag withstand rain, impact, weight, and who have no patience for failing zippers and cracking seams. Eric founds Inside Line Equipment. The name comes from cycling: the inside line, the interior trajectory, the shortest path in a turn.
The workshop first set up in SF, then moved to Berkeley. Each bag is hand-sewn in the Californian workshop. The materials are X-Pac (the same laminated fabric as boat sails), Cordura 1000D, waterproof closures, oversized hardware. These are technical bags made by people who use their own bags every day in the San Francisco rain.
The Travel Pack is the product that put ILE on the map. It's a rectangular box. No curves, no aesthetic compromises, no attempt to look like a city bag. It's a container optimized for maximum volume in minimum space. Among enthusiasts, it polarizes: some find the design brutalist and ugly, others adopt it and never return to a classic bag.
The more recent Radius 20L made a splash online. Among enthusiasts, a detailed AMA, unanimously positive comments. "Within 5 minutes of browsing, I was in love." It's the everyday bag for those who want technical performance without the outdoor look.
ILE is tiny. Eric and a small team, a workshop in Berkeley, no distributors, no marketing. The kind of brand where you meet the founder at a local event and he talks to you about his bags for an hour. About enthusiasts: "I met the founder, Eric, over the weekend at an event." Mission Workshop considers them peers, which in the world of American technical bags is the ultimate compliment.
