Philosophy

Since 1950, Jieldé has represented the marriage of industrial utility and French design. Born from Jean-Louis Domecq’s need for a tool-lamp that would never fail, our philosophy remains unchanged: to create indestructible, articulated lighting that serves the user. Design, for us, is born from necessity.

History

In 1950, Jean-Louis Domecq, a mechanic based in Lyon, found himself frustrated. He needed a task lamp for his workshop that was flexible enough to illuminate his work but robust enough to survive a brutal industrial environment. He couldn't find one - wires would snap, joints would fail, and standard lamps simply weren't built for the job. So, he decided to build his own. The design brief was simple: it had to be simple, robust, and articulated. Domecq spent two years industrializing his creation. The breakthrough was a sealed ball joint that conducted electricity without any visible or moving wires. In an era before synthetic cables, this eliminated the constant risk of fraying and electrical accidents. He named the brand "Jieldé," derived from his own initials: J.L.D. Launched in 1953, the "Standard" lamp quickly became the backbone of French design offices and factories. Each lamp was handmade in Lyon and stamped with a unique serial number. It wasn't just a light; it was, as the 1955 brochure claimed, "the most rigid working lamp in the world." Domecq passed away in 1983, but his legacy only grew. In 1987, the Loft collection transitioned the Jieldé from the factory floor to the living room, sparking a worldwide obsession with French industrial style. Today, every Jieldé is still handmade in Lyon using the same indestructible ball joints, remaining a timeless icon of functional beauty.
