Kletterwerks
Climbing bags, Bozeman 1975 heritage, Mystery Ranch sub-brand
No longer an independent brand: absorbed by Mystery Ranch (YETI). Quality maintained but brand identity lost. We recommend Mystery Ranch directly rather than this ghost sub-brand.
Philosophy
Heritage Montana climbing bags. Classic design, American construction, 1975 legacy.
History
Bozeman, Montana, 1975. Dana Gleason is a climber. He needs bags that resist rock, abrasion, and weight. He founds Kletterwerks ("climbing factory" in German) and makes a technical choice that will change the industry: 1000d Cordura. This fabric, designed by DuPont to reinforce tires, had never been used for bags. Gleason adapts it. Tested on the abrasive quartzite of Devils Lake, Wisconsin. Result: nearly indestructible. "Almost 40 years later, 1000d Cordura continues to be an industry leader."
Kletterwerks bags are built with obsessive rigor. YKK #10 for main closures, #8 for pockets. Nickel-plated steel Waterbury buckles. Custom leather pulls. Lifetime warranty. The Summit (20L), the Flip (23L), and the Drei Zip become benchmarks in the American climbing and backpacking world.
In 2000, Gleason founds Mystery Ranch, a new brand of technical bags. Kletterwerks goes dormant. It is resurrected as a heritage sub-brand of Mystery Ranch, which is itself acquired by YETI for $36 million in February 2024.
Then YETI does what big corporations always do: in late 2025, the Mystery Ranch civilian line is discontinued. Kletterwerks, already a ghost, disappears completely. The website is dead. Production is stopped.
Among enthusiasts, nostalgia is palpable. "Kletterwerks was the OG." Vintage pieces from the 70s-80s, the original Rock Packs, have become collector's items. The technical heritage survives in the DNA of Mystery Ranch, but Kletterwerks itself is a name on a tombstone.
