Lamy
Pens and writing instruments, Heidelberg manufacture since 1930
Philosophy
At Lamy, we believe that design should be functional, honest, and timeless. Since 1930, we have applied the principles of the Bauhaus to create writing instruments that are as much engineering marvels as they are everyday tools. Our commitment to quality remains rooted in Heidelberg, where every Lamy pen is born from a legacy of precision and innovation.
History
The Lamy story began in 1930 when Josef Lamy, a former export director for Parker, established his own company in Heidelberg. For decades, the brand produced reliable but unremarkable writing instruments. The turning point came when Josef’s son, Manfred, took the reins and sought to infuse the brand with a bold, modern identity. In 1966, Manfred collaborated with Gerd A. Müller, a designer previously known for his work at Braun. Müller applied the 'Form Follows Function' principles of the Bauhaus to create the Lamy 2000. Crafted from seamless Makrolon with a discreet 14k gold nib and a piston-fill mechanism, the 2000 was a masterpiece of minimalist engineering. Sixty years later, its design remains virtually unchanged and is part of the MoMA's permanent collection. In 1980, the brand revolutionized the entry-level market with the Safari, designed by Wolfgang Fabian. Made from rugged ABS plastic with an ergonomic triangular grip, the Safari was designed to be indestructible. It was originally intended for German schoolchildren, but its reliability made it a cult favorite worldwide. Despite its global success, Lamy remains independent and committed to its roots, with all production still taking place in Heidelberg.
