Lavenham
Quilted jackets and gilets, classic British outerwear
Philosophy
A utilitarian garment turned classic: lightweight, durable, repairable, designed to be worn for years rather than noticed for a moment. Lavenham stands for understated British elegance where function shapes form.
History
Suffolk, 1969. Mrs Elliot is an equestrian and lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth II. Her problem: her horses' blankets are heavy, bulky, slow to dry. She invents the quilted nylon blanket, light, warm, practical. The kind of innovation born from daily annoyance.
In 1972, riders who saw their horses better covered than themselves ask for matching jackets. Lavenham is born. The first quilted jacket. Not Barbour, Lavenham. The village of Lavenham in Suffolk gives the brand its name.
Over 50 years later, every piece is still sewn by hand in the Suffolk factory. No offshoring, no Asian outsourcing. That's become rare for a British outerwear brand, Barbour moved some production, Lavenham didn't.
The brand has cult status in Japan, Beams, United Arrows have distributed it for years. Collaborations with Comme des Garçons and Noah NY anchored Lavenham on the international fashion radar. The original quilted jacket, adopted by the avant-garde.
Less known than Barbour outside the UK and Japan, but more authentic on one crucial point: 100% Made in England, always.
The Lavenham quilted jacket has become a uniform in the English countryside, from Norfolk to the Cotswolds, it's the jacket you throw on to walk the dogs, go to the pub, trudge through mud. The Duchess of Cambridge wears one. Suffolk farmers too. Same jacket.
Made in the same factory since 1969, each piece is cut and sewn by a team of 50 seamstresses. The polyester padding is custom-developed, not too thick (it's not a puffer), not too thin. Short, fitted, functional cut. No frills. £200-400.
Iconic Products
Quilted Gilet
The world's first quilted gilet, invented by Lavenham. Quilted nylon, straight cut, light and warm. The ancestor of every sleeveless vest you see today. The kind of piece you throw on over a sweater in autumn and don't take off until spring.
Quilted Jacket
The original quilted jacket, born in 1972 when riders wanted to match their horses. Lightweight nylon, diamond quilting, classic British cut. The anti-Barbour: lighter, cleaner, more discreet. Chosen by Comme des Garçons for a collab, which says a lot about this country jacket's fashion credibility.
