Linn
Turntables, speakers, electronics and hi-fi streaming - Glasgow since 1972
Philosophy
53 years of continuous production. Same chassis, infinitely upgradable. A 1986 LP12 can become a Klimax in 2024. Still Glasgow, still Tiefenbrun (now the son). The exact opposite of planned obsolescence.
History
Ivor Tiefenbrun, Glasgow, 1972. Engineer, son of an engineer, discovers his turntable is disturbed by speaker sound pressure. Builds the Sondek LP12 - suspended sub-chassis derived from the Thorens TD 150 - and founds Linn Products near Linn Park, Castlemilk.
The LP12 has been in continuous production since 1972. 53 years. Same basic chassis, upgraded generation after generation. A 1986 LP12 can be brought to full Klimax spec in 2024. The Ship of Theseus of hi-fi.
Linn diversified: amps, speakers, streaming (Klimax DSM). Still made in Glasgow. Tiefenbrun passed the reins to his son Gilad.
specialist forums divided: fans say 'you have to spend a LOT to beat the LP12,' critics say 'always overpriced.' The truth is in between - an excellent turntable sold with premium storytelling. But it's real, made in Glasgow, and infinitely upgradable.
