Bespoke shoemaker in Vienna, third generation. Apprenticeship in Romania in uncle's workshop, 1960s. Hand-stitched or wood-pegged. Exotic leathers. One of the last great European shoemakers outside the media circuit.

Philosophy

Wood-pegged or hand-stitched. No shortcuts. A Maftei shoe is made to be worn, repaired, and passed on. Not to be photographed.

History

1960s, Piatra Neamț, Romania. Alexandru Maftei is fourteen when he begins his apprenticeship. Under the communist regime, shoemaking is serious business: bespoke boots for military officers, absolute precision, materials rationed, every cut must be right the first time. The young Alexandru forges a discipline that will never leave him.

In 1988, he flees Ceaușescu''s dictatorship and reaches Vienna. His talent does not go unnoticed: he is recruited by Rudolf Scheer & Söhne, Austria''s most prestigious shoemaker and former purveyor to the Habsburg imperial court. He rises through the ranks to lead the production workshop. The Viennese school, with its tradition of wood-pegged construction, becomes second nature.

In 1996, he opens his own workshop at Kühnplatz 6 in Vienna''s 4th district. The business is a family affair: his wife Lucia handles the patinas, and his son Lucian takes over as master last-maker. Maftei bespoke blends Central European technical rigor with a boldness in leathers and shapes that traditional Viennese shoemakers would never dare.

The signature technique is the Holzgenagelt, or wood-pegging. Small pegs of lemon or birch wood are hammered into damp leather. As it dries, the leather contracts around the wood. When worn, moisture swells the pegs, creating a bond of extraordinary strength and waterproofing. The result: a shoe that can be repaired indefinitely, one clients describe as a "leather sock" for the precision of its arch support.

The leathers are spectacular. Alligator, ostrich, shark, python, alongside the finest European calfskin and goatskin. The Seamless Wholecut, a shoe cut from a single piece of leather with no visible seams, is the technical feat that built the house''s reputation. Prices remain deliberately competitive: around 1,150 euros for a first bespoke pair including last creation and hollowed wooden shoe trees, 950 euros for subsequent orders. A radical stance against the grand houses of Savile Row or Place Vendôme.

Under Lucian''s drive, Maftei travels. Trunk shows in Hamburg, Frankfurt, Munich, Stockholm, Oslo, New York. Clients come from around the world: connoisseurs who have exhausted the media-friendly shoemakers and seek something deeper, more personal.
