Fine knitwear and cashmere, French know-how since 1880.

🇫🇷 France, Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut Founded in 1880 $$$

Design in Paris, manufacturing at own workshop in Braga (Portugal) since the 1950s. No production in France despite Ardèche origins.

Philosophy

French heritage, integrated Portuguese execution. Montagut sells clean, light, durable knitwear with Fil Lumiere as historic core.

History

Ardèche, 1880. Adolphe Tinland builds a silk mill in the Auzène valley, near Saint-Sauveur-de-Montagut. The Bouif and Sablas mills prosper for forty years. In 1925, his descendant Georges Tinland sets up La Bonneterie Cévenole near Valence and sells the first silk stockings under the name Montagut. During the war, the company supports the Resistance and turns to luxury lingerie.

The stroke of genius comes in 1963. Léo Gros, Georges Tinland's son-in-law, invents with a friend the Fil Lumière, an artificial thread that mimics silk in all its qualities - brilliance, drape, softness - without its fragilities. This exclusive material becomes the house's absolute signature. Léo travels the world with his Fil Lumière polo shirts, from the Middle East to Indochina, making Montagut an international name.

Since the late 1950s, the house has been knitting and crafting its collections in-house at its own workshop in Braga, Portugal. This is an important point: despite the Ardèche origins and Parisian design office, manufacturing is Portuguese. But it's an integrated workshop, not outsourcing. Pierre Gros, Léo's son, develops "fully fashioned" expertise in wool, cotton and cashmere in the 80s. In 1992, Montagut acquires Pôles, a high-end knitwear specialist. Today, the house celebrates 145 years under the sixth family generation. Independent, Ardèche-born, Portuguese-made.
