Maison Tamboite
Bespoke lacquered steel bicycles, oldest Parisian frame builder since 1912
Oldest Parisian frame builder (1912), still active. Bespoke bicycles in the haute couture tradition: frame fitted like a suit, lacquer finishes, leather, steel. Louis Vuitton collaboration. The bicycle elevated to Parisian art object for over a century.
Philosophy
Since 1912, each bicycle has been treated as a personal commission: frame fit like tailoring, finishes built through specialist workshops, final character set in-house. The goal is not volume, but a durable object made for one rider and rooted in Parisian craft.
History
Maison Tamboite opened in Paris in 1912, when the bicycle was still the city's main way to get around. At the time, Paris had many frame builders. Over the twentieth century, most of them disappeared as the car took over. Tamboite did not. The workshop remains active and is now the oldest Parisian frame builder still in operation. When Frédéric Jastrzebski took over, he made a clear decision: no volume production, but a return to craft and custom work. The house treats the bicycle the way haute couture treats clothing. Each frame is adjusted to one rider, with geometry defined through a postural study, then finished to the client's specifications for colors, materials, and details. Production relies on a network of specialist artisans. Leather for saddles and grips comes from a Belleville workshop in Paris. Bent beech rims are made near Lake Como in Italy. Chrome and enamel work are handled by French companies, while final patina is completed at Tamboite. Every bicycle is individually numbered. Personalization goes all the way through: enamel color and finish, leather type and tone, wooden crate color, and beech rim tint. Clients can choose a classic two-speed setup, electric assistance, or a hybrid configuration. The result is not a catalog bike but a one-off object made for a single cyclist. The collaboration with Louis Vuitton, which commissioned a dedicated series in house colors, reinforced that position. The New York Times covered the house in 2017 as an example of haute couture thinking applied to bicycles. The Henri model, named after the classic Parisian porteur, exists in both classic and electric versions and summarizes Tamboite's approach: urban mobility, Parisian style, and long-standing handcraft.
