Philosophy
An umbrella is not a disposable object. It is a masterpiece of wood, silk, and the inherited mastery of five generations. When it rains in Naples, a Talarico is the only true shield.
History
Naples, 1860. Long before the unification of Italy, the workshop was already crafting handmade umbrellas and parasols under the name "Al Giapponese di Giovanni Buongiovanni." The name changed when Emilia Buongiovanni married Achille Talarico, marking the beginning of a legacy that would span five generations. In 1924, Giovanni Talarico and his wife Concetta Carlevalis settled at Vico Due Porte a Toledo 4/B. Remarkably, the address hasn't changed in over a century. The workshop remains tucked away in that same narrow alley descending toward Via Toledo, a living testament to Neapolitan craft. The process is strictly manual and fiercely traditional. Handles are carved from precious materials - cherry wood, bamboo, Sorrento lemon wood, horn, and even silver. Unlike mass-produced items, the wood is steam-curved by hand rather than bent mechanically. Canopies are stitched from high-quality silk or heavy cotton, with each piece either custom-made or adjusted in-shop to fit the owner perfectly. At 87, fourth-generation master Mario Talarico Sr still works at the bench alongside his nephew, Mario Jr, who now leads the house. Their client list is a "who's who" of Neapolitan culture and global royalty, including Totò, Eduardo De Filippo, Pope Francis, and King Charles III - the latter famously rarely seen without his steam-curved bamboo Talarico umbrella. Officially recognized as the oldest of only nine "Ultracentenary Historical Enterprises" in Naples, Talarico represents the antithesis of the modern disposable culture. In a world of fleeting products, they create objects designed to be passed down through generations.
