American hi-fi amplifiers, blue VU meters, Binghamton since 1949

🇺🇸 United States, Binghamton Founded in 1949 $$$$

Acquired by Bose in November 2024, after passing through Clarion, D&M Holdings, and several private equity funds since 2003. Production remains in Binghamton (NY) and quality hasn't changed so far, but the future under Bose is uncertain. The blue VU meters have become as much a status symbol as a guarantee of sonic quality.

Philosophy

American manufacturer of hi-fi amplifiers and electronics since 1949. Audio icon with its blue VU meters. Production in Binghamton, NY. Acquired by Bose in 2024.

History

Binghamton, NY, 1949. Frank McIntosh and Gordon Gow. Blue VU meters, black faceplates, instantly iconic. THE reference in American amplification.

Three pillars: sound quality, lifetime repairability (Sharon or Dave answer the phone in Binghamton), exceptional resale value. A 1970s McIntosh still sells for serious money. But ownership trajectory worries: Clarion, D&M, PE funds, then Bose (November 2024). Bose = mass market audio marketing. McIntosh = purist audio engineering. Opposite cultures. Nothing changed yet. But five owners in twenty years raises the question: not if, but when.

Iconic Products
