🇫🇷 France, Burlats Founded in 1983 $$

Philosophy

Zero synthetics, no exceptions. Merino, mohair, alpaca, silk, linen, organic cotton - every fiber is chosen for what it does, not for what it costs. Everything is knitted in Burlats, Tarn. The workshop is open, anyone can come and see how it is made.

History

1983. Myriam Joly, trained as an agricultural engineer, settles in Burlats, in the heart of the Sidobre. Tarn has a centuries-old textile tradition - Mazamet was the world capital of wool pulling, and Castres a historic wool basin. Myriam is not from textiles. She comes from the land. Her first move is to bring in an Angora goat herd, one of the first in France, to save her farm.

From goat to yarn, from yarn to sock. Missègle is born like that, almost by accident. The first pieces are mohair socks, knitted in a workshop in Burlats. The project is simple: natural fibers, local knitting, zero compromise.

The obsession, from day one, is fiber. No synthetics, ever. Merino, mohair, alpaca, baby alpaca, silk, cashmere, linen, organic cotton. Each material is chosen for what it does: mohair for warmth without weight, alpaca for softness, linen for summer.

What sets Missègle apart from industrial hosiery is stitch density. Their machines run at 200 needles where industry often stays at 80 to 120. More needles means a tighter knit, stronger and longer lasting. Sock toes are hand linked - every stitch is picked up one by one to eliminate the seam. It is a rare, slow gesture that changes how the sock feels on foot.

Innovation is there too. Cordura-reinforced socks withstand 100,000 Martindale cycles - fourteen times the standard. Wholegarment sweaters are knitted in 3D on Shima Seiki machines, with no seams at all. High technical precision serving comfort and natural fibers.

In 2012, Myriam's sons - Gaëtan and Olivier Billant - join the workshop. The handover happens in continuity. In 2016, the company earns the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label, official recognition of outstanding industrial know-how.

The workshop stays open to the public. They show the knitting machines and explain the difference between a 200-needle knit and an industrial knit. Missègle claims its rural roots: total transparency, proximity, plain speaking. Nothing is hidden.

Prices remain fair. Socks run from 15 to 25 euros, sweaters from 120 to 180. Well below brands that knit in Asia under a "designed in France" label. Here, everything is made in Burlats. The range now covers socks, sweaters, scarves, underwear, and bed linen. Always natural fibers. Always Tarn.
