Mons Royale

Technical merino clothing, mountain biking and skiing, New Zealand since 2009

🇳🇿 New Zealand, Wanaka Founded in 2009 $$$

Philosophy

New Zealand merino wool performance brand. Mountain biking and skiing. ZQRX ethical merino partnership.

History

Hamish Acland grew up on Mt Somers Station, a high-country sheep farm in Canterbury. His grandfather, Sir Jack Acland, chaired the NZ Wool Board. His father, Mark, co-developed deer farming in New Zealand. Wool, for the Aclands, has been a family affair for generations.

But Hamish was first and foremost a skier. Fifth in the world in freeride in 2005, he spent his winters competing and his summers on the farm. While touring, he noticed that merino base layers were functional but drab: dull colors, utilitarian cuts, zero style. The outdoor industry dressed everyone as if they were climbing Everest.

Hannah Aubrey, meanwhile, grew up on Dalrachney Station near Wanaka - another high-country farm. A graphic designer, she returned from three years at an innovation agency in New York. When Hamish sent her an email titled "an anatomy of an idea," she deconstructed the project and rebuilt it.

In late 2008, the first samples arrived. The first ISPO in Munich: a failure. Hannah redesigned the entire graphic identity in a week. Second attempt: orders started coming in. In 2009, Mons Royale was born in Wanaka. The name: Mons for mountain, Royale for the royal treatment it deserves.

The founding idea: technical merino with vibrant colors, bold graphics, and cuts designed for mountain biking and skiing. The challenger positioning the market was missing.

The wool comes from nine merino stations in the New Zealand Southern Alps, all under ZQRX certification - a regenerative agriculture program that goes beyond sustainability. Every fiber is traceable back to its farm of origin. The yarn is spun by Suedwolle in Germany. Manufacturing takes place in China, at Shanghai Challenge Textiles, a partnership of over ten years.

The proprietary Merino Air-Con yarn - 83% merino, 13% nylon, 4% elastane - combines the softness and anti-odor properties of merino with the durability of nylon. This fabric solved the eternal problem of pure merino: pilling in high-abrasion contexts like mountain biking.

The feedback is clear. Mons Royale is described as what Icebreaker used to be: technical merino that lasts. Durability is the most cited differentiator - items still in good condition after two or three intensive seasons. The price is premium, on par with Icebreaker, but the longevity justifies it. Some sensitive individuals still find merino scratchy, but that's the material, not the brand.

Certified B Corp since November 2023, present in over a thousand retail outlets across eighteen countries, Mons Royale remains owned by Hamish and Hannah. No outside investors.

Iconic Products

Tarn Merino Shift (jersey VTT)

MTB jersey in merino with built-in windbreaker. 'Super nice' among enthusiasts. The product that defined Mons Royale: technical merino for biking, not hiking. Natural thermoregulation, anti-odor, wind protection.

Temple Tech (base layer)

Technical merino base layer for skiing and MTB. The base layer that doesn't smell after three days. Cited among enthusiasts, as more durable than Icebreaker. Merino may itch on sensitive skin, but that's the material, not the brand.

Cascade (merino hoodie)

Merino hoodie. After-ski, after-ride, everyday. The kind of piece you throw on without thinking and barely wash thanks to merino's anti-odor properties. Wanaka in a sweatshirt.
