The Nagra III arrives in 1957 and reshapes film sound recording through mechanical reliability. In 1971, the IV-S brings stereo and becomes the de facto standard across cinema and television for roughly two decades. In 1992, the Nagra D moves to 24-bit digital ahead of most of the market. For forty years, major productions around the world rely on Nagra machines. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awards Kudelski five technical Oscars in total, including distinctions in 1978 and 1991. No other audio-equipment maker has matched that record in the same category. In 1969, the miniaturized Nagra SN, then the smallest professional recorder, travels on Apollo missions. The same discreet and rugged unit is also adopted by the CIA for surveillance work, reinforcing Nagra's reputation for Swiss mechanical robustness in sensitive operations. In 1997, Nagra turns toward audiophile hi-fi with the PL-P, a tube phono preamp. The iconic modulometers move from professional recorders to amplifiers and DACs, becoming a lasting design signature. In 2012, the audio division is separated from the Kudelski Group as Audio Technology Switzerland SA, still controlled by the Kudelski family. Production remains in Romanel-sur-Lausanne with hand assembly and a compact team. For the brand's seventieth anniversary in 2022, Nagra unveils the Reference Turntable Anniversary, a more-than-60 kg deck built with instrument-grade precision. Nagra is not hi-fi pretending to be pro. It is pro heritage applied to hi-fi, on its own terms.
