Nogent***
Paring knives, kitchen knives and utensils, quality French industrial production, 100% made in Biesles
Philosophy
The last cutler in the Nogent basin. No marketing, no celebrity chef ambassador. Just honest knives, made where blades have been forged for five centuries, sold at a price everyone can afford.
History
The Nogent basin, between Langres and Chaumont, in Haute-Marne, has produced knives since the 16th century. River water for the grindstones, forest wood for the handles, local iron ore. For centuries, dozens of workshops forged blades in the villages around Nogent. In 1923, Louis André, Best Craftsman of France winner, founded his manufacture in Biesles. Three stars for three qualities: sharpness, durability, accessibility. The house spent the century doing what nobody else wanted to do anymore, making French kitchen knives, made in France, at an honest price. The others left. In Thiers, they industrialized on a grand scale. In China, they copied. The Nogent cutlers closed one by one. Nogent*** is the last one standing. Two million pieces per year, all from the same factory in Biesles. That wooden-handled paring knife in your grandmother's drawer, it was probably a Nogent.
