Obut
Steel pétanque balls, fully French-made
Dominant position: 80% French market share, fined 320,000 euros by France's competition authority in 2017 for imposed resale prices.
Philosophy
Fully integrated manufacturing in Saint-Bonnet-le-Château. Obut controls the entire chain: steel, tempering, striping, engraving. Artisanal spirit in an industrial tool.
History
Saint-Bonnet-le-Chateau, Loire, 1920s. The village is already a ball-making center when Jean Blanc invents the two-shell welded steel ball in 1927. No more nailed wood. Dozens of craftsmen settle in. Frederic Bayet and Antoine Dupuy, metalworkers who lost a subcontracting deal, found Obut in 1955. Jean Souvignet joins in 1958 and the company accelerates.
Obut is the Bic of petanque. Among enthusiasts, it's the default recommendation: 'you can't go wrong with Obut'. And that's true. The product is excellent, innovations real - curved striping for grip, varied steel grades, specific surface treatments. 80 employees, 3 million balls a year, 80 percent French market share. The EPV label crowns industrial expertise that remains artisanal in spirit.
But this crushing dominance has a price. In 2017, France's competition authority fined Obut 320,000 euros for imposed resale prices. The dominant position has killed or marginalized virtually all French competitors except La Boule Bleue in Marseille. Obut is both the guardian of the temple and the one preventing others from entering.
The factory is now the heart of L'Aventure Obut: restaurant, petanque courts, factory tours. Everything still in Saint-Bonnet-le-Chateau.
