Osprey
Outdoor, trekking and travel backpacks - Anti-Gravity suspension, lifetime All Mighty Guarantee, Cortez Colorado design
Reservations: acquired by Helen of Troy Limited (NASDAQ: HELE) in 2021 for $414.7M. Vietnam production. Value engineering signals on some recent models. All Mighty Guarantee still in effect but cost-cutting risk under group financial pressure.
Philosophy
Osprey was born from Mike Pfotenhauer's passion, who started sewing backpacks at 16 in Santa Cruz. 50 years later, Osprey is synonymous with quality, ergonomics and durability. The Anti-Gravity system (suspended back, maximum ventilation) is a reference. The All Mighty Guarantee covers any product, any reason, for life.
History
Santa Cruz, California, 1974. Mike Pfotenhauer is 16, sewing custom backpacks in his garage. Each bag fitted to its owner's body. Osprey's original DNA: ergonomics above all.
Anti-Gravity suspension changed everything - suspended mesh back panel. Atmos AG became the world reference trekking pack. The All Mighty Guarantee is legendary: any product, any reason, lifetime. Reports mention very old packs sent back with a torn strap and replaced for free, no questions asked.
In 2021, Helen of Troy (NASDAQ: HELE) acquired Osprey for $414.7M. Some feedback suggests quality has dipped slightly on newer models. The classic dilemma: is the brand that earned trust still the same under a public group? All Mighty Guarantee holds. Design still in Cortez. But value engineering signals are there.
