PAKT ⚠️ With reservations

Minimalist travel luggage, direct sales, American design

🇺🇸 United States, Los Angeles Founded in 2018 $$

On specialist forums, the Travel Bag 35L V2 was criticized for a significant quality decline from the first version: 'it is significantly lower quality than the first iteration'. The V3 (2025) seems to have fixed these issues according to early feedback.

Philosophy

American minimalist luggage brand. Clean, functional travel bags. Launched via Kickstarter.

History

Malcolm Fontier is a motorcyclist. Not a bag designer, a motorcyclist. In the 2000s he designs his own luggage for traveling light on two wheels. One of his designs appears briefly in the Netflix documentary 'Minimalism' in 2016. Requests flood in, but the 300 units are already sold out.

Fontier then partners with The Minimalists (Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus) to relaunch the bag under a new name. The Pakt One goes on Indiegogo in 2018: $1.1 million raised. The brand is born.

Alongside it comes SeaHive, the brand's anti-plastic initiative. Bags use recycled materials, packaging is plastic-free. Positioning is clear: minimalist, functional, responsible. Based in Austin, Texas.

The range stays narrow: a duffel (the Pakt One), a backpack (Travel Backpack), a few accessories. Intentionally. But the V2 Travel Bag 35L sparked serious controversy on specialist forums: lower quality zippers, sloppier stitching. V3 (2025) was praised as a return to form.

The Pakt trap: it's a marketing-first brand born from a Netflix doc and an influencer partnership. Quality needs to follow. On V3, it does. Whether it lasts remains to be seen.
