Patagonia
Responsible outdoor clothing, Ventura, California since 1973
Philosophy
Californian brand founded in 1973 by Yvon Chouinard, pioneer of responsible outdoor clothing. Given to Holdfast Collective in 2022, profits fund the climate fight. B Corp certified. Manufacturing in Vietnam, Sri Lanka and China.
History
Ventura, California, 1973. Yvon Chouinard is a climber, surfer, fly fisherman. Not a businessman - he'll say so his entire life. In the 1960s he forges his own climbing pitons in his garage (Chouinard Equipment). Then realizes pitons damage rock. He invents the aluminum chock, a device that leaves no trace. First environmental act.
Clothing arrives almost by accident. Climbers need technical layers. Chouinard brings back Scottish rugby jerseys, then develops his own fabrics. The name comes from Patagonia - that end-of-the-world region evoking adventure and wild spaces.
In 1996, switch to 100% organic cotton. In 2011, Patagonia publishes a full page in the New York Times on Black Friday: 'Don't Buy This Jacket.' It's not reverse marketing. The company actually calculates the carbon footprint of each product and encourages repair over repurchase.
Worn Wear, the trade-in and repair program, processes tens of thousands of pieces per year. Ironclad Guarantee: lifetime warranty on everything, free repairs.
In September 2022, Chouinard transfers company ownership (valued at $3 billion) to a trust dedicated to fighting climate change. 'Earth is now our only shareholder.'
Offshore production (Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Colombia). That's the recurring weak point. But traceability and social audits are among the industry's strictest (Fair Trade Certified). The Patagonia paradox: a brand that tells you not to buy, doing $1.5 billion in revenue.
Iconic Products
Better Sweater
The fleece. Best-selling product. Recycled polyester, classic fit, proven durability. On 애호가들: 'I've had mine for 8 years, still looks new.' The fleece you keep, not the one you throw away. The garment that embodies the Patagonia promise.
Nano Puff
Synthetic insulated jacket. Recycled PrimaLoft, packs into its own pocket. Ideal compromise between warmth, weight and ethics - no goose down. The puffer you stuff in your pack and forget until you need it.
Worn Wear (programme)
Not a product, a program. Patagonia repairs, resells and recycles its clothing. Free repairs, official second-hand market. Where virtue marketing becomes concrete. The brand that says 'Don't Buy This Jacket' and provides the tools not to buy another one.
