Peak Design
Camera bags and accessories, Capture Clip and Anchor Links, San Francisco
Peak Design remains innovative, but customer service is degrading: ghosting on warranties, asking customers to cut logos to prove destruction. The Kickstarter community spirit is fading.
Philosophy
Peak Design creates bags, accessories and carry solutions for everyday life, travel and creative work. Born on Kickstarter, the brand has established itself through functional minimalist design, recycled materials and responsible production. From urban backpacks to magnetic phone mounts, every product is designed to simplify life for people on the move.
History
San Francisco, 2010. Peter Dering takes a three-month trip around the world with a DSLR. Carrying a camera while traveling is miserable. The bag pulls on your shoulder, the camera bounces around, the decisive moment is missed because the lens was at the bottom of the bag. He invents the Capture Camera Clip: a mount that attaches the camera directly to a backpack or belt.
Kickstarter, 2011. $360,000 raised. Second most-funded project on the platform at the time. Since then, every product launches via crowdfunding: the Everyday Backpack, Everyday Sling, carbon fiber Travel Tripod. $34.4 million raised total across ten campaigns. World record for a product brand.
The company is 100% employee-owned (ESOP). B Corp certified. Lifetime warranty on everything. Repair program. Recycled materials across most of the range. Design in San Francisco, manufacturing with partners in Vietnam and China, with regular audits and strict code of conduct.
Success has a downside: the range expands fast (mobile phone accessories, bike gear) and prices climb. An Everyday Backpack costs $300. That's expensive for nylon, even well-designed. Competition (Wandrd, Moment) is closing in on the camera segment.
Peak Design is one of those rare crowdfunding-born brands that survived and grew without losing its soul. Execution is flawless, design thoughtful, customer service exemplary. Price is the only barrier.
