Pelican

Molded protective cases, lifetime warranty, military standard since 1976

🇺🇸 United States, Torrance Founded in 1976 $$

Philosophy

American manufacturer of indestructible protective cases and luggage since 1976. Military and professional standard. Main production in the United States (Torrance, CA). Unconditional lifetime warranty. Sold as Peli in Europe.

History

Torrance, California, 1976. Dave and Arline Parker launch Pelican from their garage, mail-order. First product: a watertight box for divers. The concept is radically simple - a polymer molding with an O-ring seal. It floats, withstands impacts, keeps water out.

Divers adopt it. Then photographers. Then the US military. Then NASA. Pelican cases protect sensitive equipment in the planet's most hostile environments: conflict zones, Arctic expeditions, offshore platforms. The 1510 (carry-on sized) becomes a classic among war reporters and field engineers.

Range goes from the tiny Micro Case (a few centimeters) to giant wheeled containers that transport computer servers. Everything carries a lifetime warranty, unconditional: 'You break it, we replace it. Forever.'

In 2004, Behrman Capital (New York private equity) acquires Pelican for $200 million. Production stays in the US: Torrance and South Deerfield, Massachusetts. In Europe, branded as Peli.

The only downside: price. A Pelican case costs three to five times more than a Chinese alternative (Nanuk, Apache). But it literally lasts decades. Forums are full of testimonials from 20-year-old Pelicans still in service.

One of the rare cases where 'lifetime warranty' isn't marketing. It's a statement of fact.
